Hospitalization & illness: why children are not small adults, family-centred care, and the primary stressor and approach for each stage — infant separation, toddler loss of control and two choices, preschool magical thinking, school-age detail and mastery, adolescent privacy and assent. Preparation, therapeutic play, and long-term or life-limiting illness. Diagnostics: consent, permission and assent; before, during and after a procedure; urine and stool specimens; enemas and suppositories; enteral tube placement (never the air bolus); imaging; endoscopy. Pain: pain is what the child says it is, FLACC against FACES against 0–10, the treatment room, and non-drug and drug care — sedation is not analgesia. Medication administration: the rights, why pediatric risk is higher, calculate before you prepare, oral, otic and ophthalmic technique (under 3 down and back, 3 and over up and back), IM and subcut sites, peripheral IV and central lines, IV fluid purpose, intake and output, and Holliday–Segar 100/50/20 worked through on a 25 kg child.
